Salalah ist die Hauptstadt der Region Dhofar im Süden des Oman mit etwa 178.469 Einwohnern (2005). Sie liegt am Arabischen Meer in einer landwirtschaftlich intensiv genutzten Küstenebene am Fuße des Dhofar-Gebirges. Salala ist in den letzten Jahren sehr stark gewachsen, so dass Betonbauten das Bild prägen. Im Stadtteil al-Hafa stehen noch einige der traditionellen Häuser aus Kalksteinblöcken. Tropische Plantagen und ein Vogelschutzgebiet begrünen die Stadt. Salala ist das Zentrum des Weihrauchhandels, im Suq sieht man das auch heute. The Port of Salalah is the deepwater port in the southern region of Oman, which can accommodate large vessels up to 16m draft and is the main Container Transshipment Terminal of the region. The port offers a sheltered harbor protected by a breakwater. The terminal has four berths fully operational along 1236 m of quay, where vessels of up to 16m drafts can be accommodated. This is one of the distinctive competitive advantages that the Port of Salalah has in being able to handle the worlds largest container vessels and already be equipped to handle the next generation of vessels yet to be built. Since inception, the terminal has surpassed 5 million TEU. As a result, the port has attracted major shipping lines such as China Shipping Container Lines (CSCL), Maersk Sealand Shipping, Safmarine, CMA-CGM and APL (American President Line). As well as the huge growths in transshipment cargo, since operations started the imported containers have increased by 250% and exports to over 400%. The terminal operates 24-hours by dividing the work in to two shifts, a morning and a night shift.
